Super fun little book about an alien explorer enjoying trick or treating school, not so much with his new friends as he visits earth He is a robot looking thing with gravity boosters and blinking lights, but hardly anyone notices at school there are lizards for show and tell, wayexciting.I had this as a kid but had forgotten all about it until I saw it at the library this morning Super fun little book about an alien explorer enjoying trick or treating school, not so much with his new friends as he visits earth He is a robot looking thing with gravity boosters and blinking lights, but hardly anyone notices at school there are lizards for show and tell, wayexciting.I had this as a kid but had forgotten all about it until I saw it at the library this morning

All manner of creatures walk abroad on Halloween night a reality that proves very convenient for The Thing, a spaceship like being from Outer Space, who lands near a neighborhood in the midst of trick or treating chaos Accepted by the costumed children as the new kid from down the block, The Thing tags along, collecting candy and observing the natives He eventually follows the delighted Buddy McGee home, sleeping over and accompanying him to school the next day, where his presence proves m All manner of creatures walk abroad on Halloween night a reality that proves very convenient for The Thing, a spaceship like being from Outer Space, who lands near a neighborhood in the midst of trick or treating chaos Accepted by the costumed children as the new kid from down the block, The Thing tags along, collecting candy and observing the natives He eventually follows the delighted Buddy McGee home, sleeping over and accompanying him to school the next day, where his presence proves most helpful, when Buddy realizes he has forgotten his space projectWith James Marshall s trademark brand of deadpan humor I loved the fact that Buddy suspected all along that The Thing was from Outer Space well naturally don t all kids suspect things like that , and that his parents are like so many grownups in real life utterly oblivious to their son s comments at the breakfast table Dad is even holding a newspaper with an article about a UFO sighting Haha Space Case is an amusingly alien take on a familiar theme Combining two elements that most kids will relish aliens Halloween it offers an entertaining, madcap holiday adventure, perfect for young trick or treaters everywhere Now they won t just be looking out for witches and monsters, Halloween night, but for aliens as well I m not sure exactly why it is, but Marshall full name James Edward Marshall seems to have published a number of his books under the author name Edward Marshall, and the illustrator name James Marshall, when he was, in fact, both author and artist

One of my childhood favorites along with Miss Nelson is missing, The Day Jimmy s Boa Ate the Wash, and Alistair in Outer Space , I checked it in today and just had to reread it Marshall s under stated humor and art still made me chuckle after all these years A delightfully simple tale of an interstellar visitor who shows up for tricks and treats.

This one gets a five stars but is a problematic fave, for sure If only we could get rid of the offensive costume this book would be an absolute classic I begged my parents for this book after seeing it on Reading Rainbow as a kid, and rediscovering it 30ish years later is pretty amazing because a it s 80s tastic and b it s hilariously on brand for me because I love Halloween and have always been fascinated with aliens Plus the cute little alien does math and wears a scarf with panache.

  9. James Govednik James Govednik says:

A fun introduction to science fiction for young readers A space alien comes to visit earth, and after some chilly receptions from some farm animals, the space alien encounters some trick or treaters Humorous events follow, especially at school The DVD version offers subtitles, each word highlighted as it s read, with the animation based on the illustrations from the book plus a few enhancements.

The thing from outer space is mistaken for a trick or treater on Halloween Night All the neighborhood kids think it is the new kid in town, but when the thing follows Buddy home for the night Buddy gets a surprise of his own.
