I really love this book Yes it’s a text book but the I read the eager I am to know The author has the gift of teaching and is an excellent communicator I have had the privilege of doing language exchange with some French people but most of them lacked what this author does have the ability to put across in easy plain English terms what seems mysteriously vague at first Books like that draw me than the best works of fiction Believe it or not this book is also my bedtime reading and I ain’t no kidding here The book gives generous ample explanations when drawing a comparison between French and English grammar As a result all vagueness is gone

I have endured a great many language learning courses and suffered through several dreadful textbooks that were meant to help but were foiled by poor layout missing elements or less than ideal organization I was pleasantly surprised by this book howeverI took a summer course with Celia Brickman in reading French for academia and this naturally was her textbook of choice I'm sure that having the author as an instructor increased my appreciation for this volume but honestly compared with other volumes I've surveyed this is clearly superior with cogent explanations many helpful exercises a logical organization and important to me a visually pleasant layout

This book is designed for a course with instructor and therefore no answer is provided for the exercises the author presupposes that having answer keys would lead students to read the solution without trying themselves So it may not be the best book for self learningIt offers some points eg easily confused suffixes potential mistakes which is specifically for translation and I find them very useful It doesn't offer vocabulary the closest being a list of number Overall if you have no prior knowledge to French and you don't have a tutor to guide your through the course you might want to try something else

It is a good book to figure out how to pass a French Exam You should have a person who knows french available to verify some of the exercise
